Shuggie vs Manga

I applaud anything that can take a kid away from a PlayStation or a Gameboy - that is a miracle in itself. Gary Oldman

Classic Moments #1

American Girl in Italy (1951)

Commentary by John Loengard

In the same year Ruth Orkin won third prize in LIFE's contest for young photographers, she made friends in Florence with a New York model named Jinx Allen. They decided, with tongues in cheek, to act out the hazards facing a single American woman traveling in Europe in 1951.

"I'd had this photograph in my mind for years," says Orkin, "ever since I had been old enough to go through the experiance for myself." All the pieces fell into place in the Piazza della Repubblica, where Orkin asked one of the men on the scooter to help. He understood English and explained things to his countrymen. They- quite grafefully-displayed their native "charm."

Another book review for you! Yippie Skippie!

Flannery O'ConnorThe Complete Stories

I'm a lover of Southern Lit and short stories. Flannery O'Connor can be blamed for both. Her stories cover the entire landscape of the South and its people- the good, the bad, and the ugly. For years I'd search out books of her collected stories in used bookstores and would have very little luck. Then in 1995 a college student I conversed with over the internet informed me of this book. I was bouncing off of the walls after reading that. I rushed to the largest bookstore within 25 miles of my home and found it! I've read and reread The Complete Stories to the point where I've actually managed to rub letters off of some of the pages. Treat yourself to some masterful writing, it'll be money well spent.

Can you hear my snickering?

"We used to go into the IRC rooms and pretend to be us. But at the end of the session, we would say 'I confess, my name is Steve and I am from Ottawa, I'm just sitting here with all my Radiohead books'. Then someone would come in the room and pretend to be Colin, even though Colin was downstairs playing bass. It got very twisted."-Jonny Greenwood
